#Serialmania
The Museo Nazionale del Cinema presents the exhibition #Serialmania. Immaginari narrativi da Twin Peaks a Squid Game (#Serialmania. Narrative Imaginaries from Twin Peaks to Squid Game), curated by Luca Beatrice and Luigi Mascheroni.
Set up on the reception floor of the Mole Antonelliana, it is the first exhibition project dedicated to television series, retracing the very close ties, influences, connections, affinities and differences between cinema and TV series from the 1990s to the present day.
TV series have shaped a new aesthetic, in constant dialogue with the visual arts, although in a certain sense it could be said that they have always existed, ever since the TV dramas broadcast from the 1950s and 1960s onwards. The exhibition route combines a chronological approach with a thematic one and presents a selection of twelve titles: Twin Peaks, Friends, Breaking Bad, House of Cards, ER, The Simpsons, Sex and the City, The Crown, Game of Thrones, Squid Game, Romanzo Criminale and Mare Fuori.
Scattered among shots and sequences, visitors will find many references to art throughout the exhibition. Gregory Crewdson’s photographs of the American suburbs almost seem like quotations from Twin Peaks; Mario Schifano becomes a kind of anti-hero in the 1970s Rome of Romanzo Criminale; and Alejandro Cartagena’s Car Poolers images strongly evoke the misadventures of Breaking Bad. Explicit references are also present: in Squid Game, directors and screenwriters identified a 1950s work by Escher as a precise iconographic source to convey the anxiety of a dystopian future.
The exhibition is accompanied by the catalogue #Serialmania. Immaginari narrativi da Twin Peaks a Squid Game (#Serialmania. Narrative Imaginaries from Twin Peaks to Squid Game), published by Silvana Editoriale.
The exhibition offers the following accessibility tools: an orientation map, an introductory video in Italian Sign Language, and content downloadable via QR code, including English translations of the texts, high-readability sheets with EasyReading font, and Italian/English audio.
Admission included in the museum ticket.
