Robert Altman. America America

On the occasion of the retrospective organised by Torino Film Festival, the Museo Nazionale del Cinema is organising a photographic exhibition at the Mole Antonelliana on the film director Robert Altman. 

Robert Altman travelled across America and its myths far and wide to portray its disillusionment and decline, giving a new face to American cinema, its genres and its leading figures. Comedies, noirs, musicals, science fiction, westerns, family dramas and ensemble satires come together in an unrelenting and meticulous portrait of the fading American Dream.

The photographs on display — some of which have never been shown in Italy before — all come from prestigious institutions, including Archivio Alasca, Bergamo; B.F.I. – Stills Collection, London; Film Reference Library – TIFF, Toronto; and Iconothèque La Cinémathèque Française, Paris. These images are joined by around thirty posters and lobby cards from the rich collections of the Museo Nazionale del Cinema and the Nicoletta Pacini Collection.

To accompany the exhibition and retrospective, the monographic book Robert Altman, also edited by Emanuela Martini, has been published by Torino Film Festival / Edizioni il Castoro. In addition to featuring all the photographs in the exhibition, the volume includes four newly commissioned essays by Emanuela Martini, Giulia Carluccio, Enrico Magrelli and Mark Minnett of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, as well as unpublished interviews with actors Keith Carradine and Michael Murphy, producer Matthew Sieg — an Altman collaborator since the 1980s — and Stephen Altman, the director’s son and a renowned production designer, nominated for an Oscar in 2002 for Gosford Park.
